H&C®
Shield PlusTM Ultra Concrete
Stain is a low odor, water-based stain that provides a long-lasting,
durable and decorative finish on interior and exterior concrete
and masonry surfaces. You can also use this stain on asphalt and
previously painted surfaces. This stain actually bonds with concrete
and masonry to form a tough shield so it doesn't fade, peel or flake
like paint. It is resistant to acids, ultraviolet rays, oil, gas
and alkali.
H&C®
Shield PlusTM Ultra Concrete
Stain is available in a variety of ready-to-use and tintable colors,
as well as clear. For added durability, we recommend H&C® Shield Ultra Plus Clear as a final coat. And for slip resistance to damp or inclined areas that tend to get slippery, or where traction is important, add H&C®
SharkGripTM Slip Resistant
Additive to your stain.

*Complete surface prep is essential for a successful project.
You'll need a stiff broom, nylon/polyester brush, a soft-woven roller cover with a 3/8" - 1/2" nap, a roller frame, soap, water and a paint tray.
You can also use an airless sprayer,* conventional sprayer or high-volume low-pressure sprayer for ease and quickness.
| Airless Sprayer |
Pressure: 1500 psi Tip: .013" - .017" |
| Conventional Sprayer |
Air Pressure: 30 - 50 psi Fluid Pressure: 15 - 20 psi Cap/Tip: 704/FX or equivalent |
| High-Volume Low Pressure Sprayer |
Cap/Needle: Titan #3 or equivalent |
*Make sure to back roll after airless spraying to work the product smoothly and evenly into the surface. This will decrease the possibility of puddles or runs on the surface and ensure a properly penetrated finish.
Weather Conditions
- Air and surface temperature should be between 50º and 90ºF during and for 24 hours following application. This will ensure proper product penetration. If temperature exceeds 90ºF, dampen bare concrete with a fine spray of water to lower the surface temperature.
Thinning
- For bare concrete, thin your first coat with one pint of water per gallon of stain. But, do not thin your second coat-use it full strength.
- When applying to asphalt and previously painted surfaces, do not thin either coat.
- For vertical applications or very porous surfaces, you do not have to thin.
Applying
- Before applying your coating, make sure you have followed the
proper surface preparation
methods for the surface you are coating.
- For horizontal applications, after surface prep, sweep the surface
with a stiff broom to remove any remaining residue.
- You can apply the stain on dry to slightly damp surfaces.
- Two coats of H&C®
Shield PlusTM Ultra Concrete
Stain are usually sufficient, but extremely porous surfaces may
require a third coat for a uniform appearance.
Cleaning
- Cleanup is easy-simply use soap and water after your project is complete.
First Coat:
- If your surface has corners or edges, coat those with your brush first to assure complete coverage of the stain.
- Using your roller, evenly apply the first coat to the rest of your surface, working in one direction.
- Let it dry at least 2 hours before applying your second coat.
Second Coat:
- For best coverage, use your roller and apply your second coat in the opposite direction of the first coat (i.e., apply North to South if you applied the first coat East to West).
On freshly seal-coated asphalt, wait 90 days or until water absorbs
into the surface before applying H&C®
Shield PlusTM
Ultra Concrete Stain.
