Supplies Needed
You'll need: a topcoat color, one of our stencil patterns of your choice, a tape measure, masking paper, masking tape, a chalk line, a paint tray filled with your base color, a brush, and a high-volume low pressure sprayer or a Wagner® power sprayer.
- Using a tape measure, find the center of the entire surface area (Figure1)* that you are stenciling.
- Mark the center with the chalk line.
*Example: If your driveway surface is 20' wide, draw your chalk line at the 10' mark down the entire length of the driveway. This will create two equal sections-call them section A and section B-which will be your guides for keeping the stencil straight.
- Protect surrounding areas from "overspray" by
covering them with masking paper and masking tape (Figure
2).
- Keep a tray of your base color and a brush handy so you
can easily touch up the grout lines in case you make a mistake.
- You must spray all H&C®
Concrete Stencil Templates using a high-volume low pressure
sprayer or a Wagner power sprayer, which you can find at
your local home improvement store.
- If you choose to apply a border in your design, begin
with that stencil along the perimeter.
Now You Can Begin Stenciling!
- Place the stencil on the top center of section A (Figure3).
- Begin stenciling section A from top to bottom.
- Complete all of section A before you begin stenciling section B.
- Spray the top color, holding the sprayer 15" to 18" directly over the stencil (Figure 4). DO NOT spray at an angle because this will cause the top color to bleed underneath the stencil. Move the sprayer gently in a back and forth motion, using a light, misty spray, and not a thick, heavy spray. Note: it's a good idea to adjust your sprayer and practice on a scrap piece of cardboard before you begin.
- If you have tight areas to stencil, you can cut the stencil into smaller pieces making sure you continue the pattern. Do this step last.
H&C®
Concrete Coatings dry quickly, so you can move the stencil
approximately 10 minutes after applying your top color. However,
dry time is weather-dependent-air, surface temperature, wind,
humidity and exposure to sunlight all affect dry time-so test
an unseen area first to check for dryness.
- When moving the stencil (Figure 5), gently lift it up so that you do not smear the pattern, and place it below or alongside the area you just sprayed (caution: do not flip the stencil over).
- You will have to partially overlap the stencil where you last left off.
- Now place the stencil on the top center of section B. Be sure to keep the stencil in the same direction as it was on the first half to ensure that the pattern continues in the same way (Figure 3).
- Continue stenciling following directions above.
Now that you've created your own custom look, you may want
additional protection. For increased protection or a high
gloss finish, apply a final coat of H&C®
Clear 23 Sealer when using H&C®
Silicone Acrylic Concrete Sealer. Or apply
a final coat of H&C®
Shield PlusTM
Ultra Clear when using H&C®
Shield PlusTM
Ultra Concrete Stain.
